The 'Split' director's upcoming psychological thriller starring Josh Hartnett depicts a shocking twist at a concert and draws inspiration from a bizarre 1985 sting operation.

AceShowbiz - M. Night Shyamalan is back with another original movie that's already generating buzz ahead of its 2024 release. "Trap", set to hit cinemas on August 2, stars Josh Hartnett as a father who takes his daughter to a concert, only for the event to turn into a police sting operation aimed at capturing his character, a notorious serial killer. Inspired by the real-life 1985 Operation Flagship, where U.S. Marshals lured fugitives with fake NFL tickets, "Trap" promises a mix of thrilling twists and dark humor.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Shyamalan recounted his inspiration for "Trap". He was influenced by his daughter's burgeoning pop star career, the buzz of Taylor Swift concerts, and the bizarre story of Operation Flagship. He found the idea of police disguised as cheerleaders and mascots to be twisted and funny, a sentiment that shaped the film’s unique atmosphere.

Shyamalan took the concept to a whole new level by setting his thriller against the backdrop of a real concert. He explained, "What if 'The Silence of the Lambs' happened at a Taylor Swift concert?" To make this vision come to life, Shyamalan directed an entire concert within the movie, emphasizing that it wasn't just a background event but integral to the story. His daughter Saleka Shyamalan plays Lady Raven, the pop star headlining the concert, adding to the film's authentic feel.

Shyamalan has been vocal about his commitment to creating original movies, often funding them himself to maintain creative control. He stressed the importance of originality in the industry, saying, "I really do believe in the original movie. I want the industry to move towards more original storytelling. I think audiences would really like it. Look, I know there’s safety in IP. But it's really important that we come to the movies and see something we've never seen before. I'll keep fighting for that."

Despite the dominance of franchise films and remakes, Shyamalan's original works continue to perform well at the box office. His previous films "Knock at the Cabin" and "Old", both opened at number one, proving that there is still a strong audience for original stories. With "Trap", he aims to continue this streak and inspire studios to take more risks on unique projects.

As fans eagerly await the film's release, many have already begun speculating on potential twists and hidden easter eggs within the trailer. "Trap" promises to be another mind-bending addition to Shyamalan's illustrious filmography, offering something truly fresh and original.
