After being formally proclaimed as the new sovereign, King Charles pays tribute to his late mother Queen Elizabeth and approves order that her funeral will be a bank holiday in U.K.

AceShowbiz - On Saturday (10.09.22), King Charles has been officially proclaimed as the new sovereign at an Accession Council in the State Apartments of St James's Palace. The Accession Council was called as soon as possible to make the formal announcement after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon (08.09.22) in Balmoral, Scotland and Charles, as heir apparent, automatically became King.
The ceremony - which was televised live for the first time in history - opened with Lord President Penny Mordaunt, who said, "My lords, it is my sad duty to inform you that her most gracious majesty, Queen Elizabeth the second has passed away on Thursday the 8th of September 2022 at Balmoral Castle."
Charles was not present for the first part of the ceremony as he was proclaimed King by the clerk of the council, who said, "Whereas it has pleased almighty god to call to his mercy our late sovereign lady Queen Elizabeth the Second of blessed and glorious memory, by whose decease the crown of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is solely and rightfully come to Prince Charles, Philip Arthur George."
"We therefore, the lords spiritual and temporal of this realm, and members of the House of Commons together with other members of her late majesty's privy council and representatives of the realms and territories, alderman, citizens of London and others, with one voice and consent of tongue and heart publish and proclaim that the Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, is now by our the death of our late sovereign of happy memory, become our only lawful and happy liege Lord."
"Charles III, by the grace of god of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of his other realms and territory, King, head of the commonwealth, defender of the faith, to whom we do acknowledge all faith and obedience with humble affection, beseeching god by whom kings and queens do reign to bless his majesty with long and happy years to reign over us."
He ended by saying "God Save the King," which the members of the council chanted back to him in unison. The proclamation was then signed by Privy Councillors including William, the Prince of Wales, Camilla, the Queen Consort, Prime Minister Liz Truss, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and Mordaunt.
The second part of the ceremony involves the King holding his first Privy Council meeting. Afterwards, King Charles, 73, will hold a number of audiences in the 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace. At 2pm, he will meet the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Liz Truss and members of the cabinet at 2.30pm. At 3pm he will be joined by leaders of the opposition parties, and at 4pm, there will be a private meeting with the Dean of Westminster, David Hoyle.
King Charles III later paid tribute to his mother Queen Elizabeth II after being formally proclaimed as sovereign. King Charles said, "It is my most sorrowful duty to announce to you the death of my beloved mother the Queen. I know how deeply you and the entire nation and I think I may say the whole world sympathises with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered. It is the greatest consolation to me to know of the sympathy expressed by so many to my sister and my brothers and as such overwhelming affection and support should be extended to our whole family in our loss. To all of us as a family."
"As to this kingdom and to the wider family of nations of which it is a part, my mother gave an example of lifelong love and of selfless service. My mother's reign was unequalled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even as we grieve we give thanks for this most faithful life. I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty which have now passed to me."
"In taking up these responsibilities I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these islands, and of the commonwealth realms and territories across the world. In this purpose I know that I shall be upheld by the affection and loyalty of the peoples whose sovereign I have been called upon to be, and in the discharge of these duties, I will be guided by the council of their elected parliaments."
In his speech, Charles also paid tribute to his wife Camilla, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, praising her for her support. He said, "In all this I am profoundly encouraged by the constant support of my beloved wife. I take this opportunity to confirm my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of surrendering the hereditary revenues, including the crown estate to the government for the benefit of all in return for the sovereign grant which supports my official duties as head of state and head of nation."
"In carrying out the heavy task that has been laid upon me, to which I dedicate what remains to me of my life. I pray for the guidance and help of almighty God."
The Principal Proclamation declaring King Charles III the new sovereign has been read at St James's Palace. Following the Accession Council, the address - part of the historic procedure of informing the country that the former monarch has died - was read by Garter King of Arms David White, accompanied by the Earl Marshal on Saturday (10.09.22).
White read the address, the same as that which was earlier read out by the clerk to the Accession Council.
As the new monarch, King Charles III has approved an order that Queen Elizabeth's funeral will be a bank holiday in the UK. The 73-year-old monarch - who was formally confirmed as King during an Accession Council at St James' Palace in London on Saturday (10.09.22) - approved the proposal from the Lord President of the Council Penny Mordaunt.
She proposed that the day of the Queen's funeral will be a bank holiday across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. King Charles then signed the proclamation, approving the bank holiday. The date of Queen Elizabeth's funeral has not yet been announced, but it is expected to take place on Monday, 19 September.
