Brendan Fraser to Villainize HBO Max's 'Batgirl'

The Rick O'Connell in 'The Mummy' trilogy has been tapped to play comic book villain Firefly in the upcoming superhero film, which has Leslie Grace starring in the lead role.

AceShowbiz - Brendan Fraser is coming to Gotham City. The actor, who is best known for his portrayal of adventurer Rick O'Connell in "The Mummy" trilogy has been, has been cast for HBO Max's "Batgirl" in a villainous role.

Fraser will play Firefly, a sociopath with a passion for pyrotechnics, Deadline reports. Known as one of Batman's most recurring enemies in the comic books, he is armed with winged jetpack which allows him to fly through Gotham City while setting buildings on fire.

There have been several incarnations of Firefly and the most well-known one is Garfield Lynns. He is a special effects expert who turns to crime after the economy in Gotham collapses and who believes he can see visions in the fires he creates. After a confrontation with Batman left almost his entire body charred, he designs a fireproof battle suit to protect himself from his own flames from this point on.

Fraser, who currently stars on another DC Universe / HBO Max project, the "Doom Patrol" series, will star opposite Leslie Grace in "Batgirl". The "In the Heights" actress is cast in the lead role of Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Batgirl, the daughter of Gotham police commissioner Jim Gordon.

J.K. Simmons is set to reprise his role as Jim Gordon after first playing the character in 2017's "Justice League". Jacob Scipio was recently also added to the cast in an undisclosed role.

"Bad Boys for Life" directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are set to serve behind the lens with "Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn" scribe Christina Hodson penning the script.

It was previously reported that filming will begin in November for a 2022 release on HBO Max. It will be one of the first major DC properties to debut exclusively on the streamer.
