The actress who gained fame for her leading role in Stanley Kubrick's controversial pedophile movie is announced by her longtime friend to have passed away.

AceShowbiz - Actress Sue Lyon has died at the age of 73.

The star, who rose to fame at the age of 14 for her controversial leading role in Stanley Kubrick's 1962 adaptation of "Lolita" - which depicted a pedophile's relationship with a 12-year-old girl - passed away on Thursday, December 26, her longtime friend Phil Syracopoulos told The New York Times.

He said she had been in declining health for some time, and died at her home in Los Angeles, California.

Lyon accumulated more than two dozen film and television credits from 1959 to 1980, but was best known for her role as "Lolita", after beating 800 other actresses to land the part.

She went on to appear in several other movies, including "Night of the Iguana" and "7 Women", with her most recent appearance in 1980's "Alligator".
