The Italian cinema icon, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 1975 for her role as Severine in Francois Truffaut's 'Day for Night', has died at the age of 96.

AceShowbiz - Italian cinema icon Valentina Cortese has died at the age of 96.

The 1940s star, who passed away on Wednesday (July 10) in Milan, leaves behind a legacy that includes roles in the 1948 Italian version of "Les Miserables", "The Glass Mountain", and "The Barefoot Contessa".

In 1975, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Severine in Francois Truffaut's "Day for Night".

Cortese was honoured by Venice Film Festival bosses in 2017, when they debuted Francesco Patierno's documentary, "Cortese with Diva!", highlighting her life and career.

The actress, who was also known for her sharp style, was married to American actor Richard Basehart for nine years. The pair had one son, actor Jackie Basehart, who died in Milan in 2015.
