AceShowbiz - Prince Harry has called for a ban on Fortnite. The 34-year-old British royal waged a war against the addictive game and social media as he attended an event at a YMCA in west London on Thursday evening, April 4.
Speaking with experts about the issue of mental health, the Duke of Sussex said of the highly popular post-apocalyptic survival game, "That game shouldn't be allowed. Where is the benefit of having it in your household?"
"It's created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. It's so irresponsible," he went on saying of the game's bad effects, as quoted by BBC. "It's like waiting for the damage to be done and kids turning up on your doorsteps and families being broken down."
The red-head prince added that social media was "more addictive than alcohol and drugs."
Fortnite, which is developed by Epic Games and first released in 2017, is played by more than 200 million people globally. Bloomberg recently reported how bad the game has influenced the users' psychological and social behaviors. According to the site, addiction to the game forced parents to send their kids to rehab.
Debbie Vitany, a parent to 17-year-old son Carson, said her son spent 12 hours a day playing the video game. Teachers complained he fell asleep in class and his grades have plummeted. "We'd made some progress in getting him to cut down his Fortnite hours and get better sleep, but he's slipped back into his old habits," said Debbie, who lives near Saginaw, Michigan. "I've never seen a game that has such control over kids' minds."
Lorrine Marer, a British behavioral specialist who works with kids battling game addiction, said of Fortnite, "This game is like heroin. Once you are hooked, it’s hard to get unhooked."
