The 'Ghostbusters 3' director enrages fans after he said that he would hand the upcoming installment 'back to the fans,' which is interpreted as a diss to the Paul Feig-directed movie.

AceShowbiz - Jason Reitman caused uproar with his recent remarks which were interpreted as an insult to the all-female "Ghostbusters (2016)", but he claims that it's a misunderstanding. Clarifying his initial statements, the director of the upcoming "Ghostbusters" movie says he admires the works of Feig and the cast in the 2016 movie.

The son of original "Ghostbusters" director Ivan Reitman took to Twitter to respond to the backlash from fans, "Wo, that came out wrong." He continued, "I have nothing but admiration for Paul and Leslie and Kate and Melissa and Kristen and the bravery with which they made Ghostbusters 2016. They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie!"

Reitman made the initial statements when speaking on Bill Burr's "Monday Morning" podcast about retro visual effects and original musical cues that Reitman is using from the 1984 film. "We went back to the work files for the sound of the proton pack. And we went back to the stems of Elmer Berstein's score," he said.

"Just for where it says, in the teaser, 'Summer 2020,' we went back and found the original physical vinyl letters they used to create the 'Ghostbusters' poster in 1984, rescanned them." Reitman went on sharing, "Then our title guys reprinted them. We filmed the titles, not like in a computer. We shot physical titles with a light and smoke effect because that’s how they would have done it back in the day."

He added, "This is going to be a love letter to 'Ghostbusters'. I love this franchise. I grew up watching it. I consider myself the first 'Ghostbusters' fan. I was like seven years old when that movie came out and I love it. I want to make a movie for my fellow 'Ghostbusters' fans." Then he said the line which didn't sit well with many of the 2016 movie's fans, "We are, in every way, trying to go back to the original technique and hand the movie back to the fans."

Many deemed his comments as sexist for dismissing the 2016 film. They pointed out how the female cast, including Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones, faced many challenges from sexist fans who launched harassment campaigns towards the 2016 reboot.

One Twitter user commented, "The @paulfeig Ghostbusters had a storyline that was faithful to the original, cameos from the first film's stars, and the best performing talent from the modern era of SNL. So all this can possibly mean is 'hand the movie back to the sexists.' "

Another thinks the same, adding, "This quote really makes it sound like the 'real' fans are the sexist, racist a**holes that attacked Leslie Jones and made the entire launch of the last Ghostbusters a nightmare for the women involved and for fans who looked forward to their work."

Someone else asked, "Are these the 'fans' who basically shit themselves in public because the previous Ghostbusters movie because it had women in it? Because I'm not gonna lie, I don't want to see the movie that caters to that sort of dimwitted chucklef**k."

"It's unfortunate Reitman feels he is handing Ghostbusters 'BACK to the fans.' We spent almost an entire year fighting off sexist jerks, trying to explain nothing was being hijacked from the fans of the original (which isn't even that great to begin with.) I feel betrayed...," read a similar comment.

Reitman announced he's making "Ghostbusters 3" in January. He previously said of the 2016 reboot, "I have so much respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film."

The upcoming movie is said to follow four new Ghostbusters, who are in their teenage days. There will be two male leads, and two female leads. Filming will reportedly begin in June for a summer 2020 release.
