AceShowbiz - "Venom (2018)" is unlikely to become the first R-rated Sony Marvel movie despite promises for an R-rated adaptation of the Marvel comic books. While the trailers hint at horror elements, Sony's execs are now reportedly walking back the words and aiming for a hard PG-13 rating.
According to Variety, "some members of Sony's brain trust believe that the film should push the very limits of PG-13 without crossing over into a higher rating." Their consideration is that the PG-13 rating will allow possible crossovers with Venom's arch-nemesis Spider-Man and other MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) characters in future movies.
The Venom movie recently underwent reshoots in Los Angeles after shooting in Georgia, but it's unknown if the reshoots had something to do with the shift of the potential rating.
Since Marvel and Sony have strengthened their ties in recent years, Sony allowed Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his alter ego to appear in "Captain America: Civil War" and "Avengers: Infinity War", while other MCU characters popped up in "Spider-Man: Homecoming". The web-slinger, however, won't appear in "Venom".
"Venom" movie follows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), who's investigating the mysterious Life Foundation. Its leader, Carlton Drake, has been testing the interaction of symbiotes on humans to create a higher being. When Eddie becomes infected with one of these alien creatures, he transforms into the anti-hero Venom.
A new still of the movie has been released via Entertainment Weekly, showing the title character threatening a tattooed man in what looks like a drug store.

Riz Ahmed plays Carlton Drake, the leader of the mysterious Life Foundation who later also turns into a symbiote, Riot. Michelle Williams stars as Ann Weying, Eddie Brock's ex-wife, with Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, Reid Scott and Scott Haze taking other roles.
Ruben Fleischer serves behind the lens, with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner providing the script. The movie is set for an October 5 release in the United States.
