The former professional baseball player reveals his girlfriend was 'choked up' after being named the recipient of the award at the upcoming MTV VMAs.

AceShowbiz - Jennifer Lopez was so touched to be named the 2018 recipient of MTV's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, she "choked up", according to her boyfriend Alex Rodriguez.

The Waiting for Tonight hitmaker was unveiled as the top honouree for this year's MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday, July 31, and A-Rod admits it was the first time he'd seen his girlfriend so moved by an accolade.

"Jennifer doesn't really get excited much about these things; she's so focused, she's about, 'What's the job to do today?', but this is the one time where I saw her get choked up," he shared on breakfast show Today on Wednesday.

"It was such an emotional (moment), such a great deal to celebrate over 25 years in her career, and the fact that it's named after Michael Jackson, someone who she idolises, she's super excited."

In addition to collecting the prestigious prize, which recognises artists who have had a huge impact on the music industry, Jennifer will also hit the stage to perform at the New York City event later this month, and Alex insists fans will not be disappointed by her show-stopping set.

"She's been rehearsing all day and all night," the retired baseball ace smiled. "She's gonna put on an incredible performance."

Jennifer sat down for a Facebook Live chat with MTV personality Sway Calloway to discuss the news upon its announcement, and fought back tears at the start of the interview after spotting the "same fans in the front row" who had supported her 20 years earlier during her previous appearances on MTV's Total Request Live show.

She has since shared the clip on Instagram and gushed, "Love my fans so much... you touch my (heart)".

J.Lo will be following in the footsteps of fellow superstars like Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Britney Spears, and last year's (17) Video Vanguard recipient, Pink, when she accepts the award at Radio City Music Hall on 20 August.
