AceShowbiz - The new double album by rap superstar Drake has become the first to score one billion streams worldwide in just one week.
Scorpion, which featured a whopping 25 tracks, dominated music streaming platforms upon its release on 29 June, and it was even certified platinum by officials at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), having shifted at least one million equivalent sales units on launch day.
It also broke Spotify's record for most global streams for an album in a single day, with over 130 million total plays, as well as smashing similar figures on Apple Music and Amazon Music Unlimited.
Now, industry sources tell Billboard.com Scorpion's bumper tracklist has helped the project cross the one billion streams milestone within its first seven days online. Over 750 million of those plays were in the U.S. alone.
The previous album record for most global streams in a week was held by rapper Post Malone for beerbongs & bentleys, which dropped in late April, and racked up almost 700 million hits.
Scorpion is expected to earn Drake the U.S. number one on the Billboard 200 chart, when the data is officially released this weekend, July 08.
