The new series is a six-episode drama about 'the invention of modern soccer how those involved in its creation reached across the class divide to establish the game as the world's most popular sport.'

AceShowbiz - Busy "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes' new TV drama about the birth of soccer has been snapped up by Netflix. The news was announced at Netflix's See What's Next event in Rome, Italy on Wednesday, April 18.

"The English Game", written by Fellowes, is a six-episode drama "about the invention of modern [soccer] and how those involved in its creation reached across the class divide to establish the game as the world's most popular sport."

Fellowes is also working on a TV series about the Rothschild banking dynasty and U.S. period drama "The Gilded Age", which will debut next year, while reports suggest a film version of "Downton Abbey" will begin shooting later this year.
