The villainous characters will put the life of the Baudelaire orphans in misery in the upcoming second season of Netflix’s TV adaptation of Lemony Snicket's beloved book series.

AceShowbiz - Netflix has unveiled a slew of first-look images of the upcoming second season of "A Series of Unfortunate Events". Released via Entertainment Weekly, the five new photos give the first look at two new bad guys who will be putting the Baudelaire orphans' life in misery in the sophomore season of TV adaptation of book series by Lemony Snicket.

One of the photos features Carmelita Spats (Kitana Turnbull). Spats, a student who makes Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes) and Sunny Baudelaire's (Presley Smith) lives miserable at Prufrock Preparatory School, is donning a bright pink dress while seemingly confronting the trio over something. In the book series, the Baudelaires call her "Cakesniffers."

Another new villain of the sophomore season, Esme Squalor (Lucy Punch), is featured in another photo. She is seen attending the IN-est most auction at Veblen Hall, standing beside Count Olaf's (Neil Patrick Harris) new persona, European auctioneer Gunther.

"It was wild," Harris says about playing the Karl Lagerfeld-inspired persona. "It's an Eastern European accent that intentionally switches from mostly German to sometimes French to a bit of British, and some Irish pops in a bit in there."

Esme is depicted as the Baudelaires' guardian in book 6, "The Ersatz Elevator". Being obsessed with the finer things in life, she joins forces with Olaf in his devious plan for the siblings.

Of Punch's portrayal as Esme, Harris says, "Lucy Punch is kind of a genius. I can't wait for everyone to see her take on her character." He adds, "She's almost a livewire of electricity that is just unhinged and everywhere, yet fully guarded and in control, but not. It's a great performance."

The new photos also offer a look at episode 7 and 8 of the new season which tackle the book "The Hostile Hospital". The book follows the Baudelaire kids who take refuge at the Heimlic Hospital. Olaf and Esme, who wear doctor attires, can be seen walking through a hallway of what looks like a shabby hospital. The last photo features a behind-the-scenes photo of Harris playing his villainous character. Olaf can be seen crashing a party as he runs over the tables.

Season 2 of the Netflix series is set to cover book 5 ("The Austere Academy") through 9 ("The Carnivorous Carnival") of Snicket's 13 book series. "Tonally, we have more action, and things are little darker and sadder," executive producer Barry Sonnenfeld speaks of the upcoming season. "Now that we're in season 2 -- and I think the same is true with the books -- now the Baudelaires can start to take some control and try and take more action. I think season 2 ends up being a little bigger in its scope and scale, but also allows for a little bit of a more fevered heartbeat from our protagonists," Harris adds.

"A Series of Unfortunate Events" will return for a second season sometime in 2018.
