AMC has unearthed a preview for the upcoming episode 5, titled "The Big Scary U", of "The Walking Dead" season 8. The new promo teases the return of Father Gabriel, who was last seen in the first episode of the current season.
Father Gabriel is seen facing head-to-head against Negan inside a trailer at The Sanctuary. Gabriel is later quickly taken down by the leader of the Saviors. Elsewhere in the teaser, Gavin says that there's a snitch among the ranks of The Saviors.
The tension between members of The Saviors is seemingly escalating and should they do not work on it, many will die, or that's what Negan believes will happen. "More folks are gonna die, man. Because I'm not there to stop it," he says to Father Gabriel.
The network has also released a sneak peek at the upcoming episode. Titled "Helping People", the video offers a better look at Negan and Gabriel's moment inside the trailer. The villain asks the priest why he decided to become one, to which Gabriel replies, "I love God, and I love people. I want to bring them together. To help people through their difficult times and to help them through weaknesses."
Negan responds by saying that's what he has done for his entire life. "That's my thing. I like to help people through their weaknesses, too. Been doing it one way or another my whole life. You want to know why people are gonna start dying in there? Because I'm not there to stop it," Negan says. While the walkers outside the trailer are growling and banging, Negan whistles with ease, before the sneak peek concludes.
Fans assume that next episode is going to reveal Negan's backstory. Star Jeffrey Dean Morgan previously teased about his character's backstory revelation duing a Q&A panel at Walker Stalker Con Atlanta. "There is a lot of Negan's backstory out there. We haven't filmed any of that, but there are conversations with a few characters where we'll find out a little more about him. We'll have some quieter moments this year, some one-on-one interactions where you'll learn more about where he's from," he shared. "Even if you hate Negan, you're gonna start to understand how he became the man that he is and why he does the things that he does. I'm learning more about Negan every time I put on my leather jacket."
Episode 5 of "The Walking Dead" season 8 airs on Sunday, November 19 at 9 P.M. on AMC.
