Just when we think we have been used to Donald Trump's insults on Twitter, his attack on journalist Mika Brzezinski shocked us. The president launched a personal and vulgar attack on the MSNBC host while slamming "Morning Joe", the show that she co-hosts with Joe Scarborough.

"I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don't watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came..," he tweeted on early Thursday, June 29. He added a few minutes later, "...to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!"

Trump's remark has drawn strong criticism from both Republicans and Democrats. More than three dozen members of the Congress have taken to Twitter to express their disgust, calling the tweet "unpresidential," "vile, sexist and unbecoming of an American leader," "divisive," "unhinged and shameful" and "amazingly graceless."

Liz Mair, a longtime Republican strategist and critic of the president, said, "It is really not normal that the president of the United States and the commander in chief would be tweeting about somebody's face. It does not conform with the norms that we expect and we treat as pretty set in stone in this country, but it's also just strange."

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the tweets "represent what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America." Another Republican senator, Ben Sasse, called Trump's remarks "beneath the dignity of your office."

Trump and "Morning Joe" once had a good relationship, with the president referring to Brzezinski and Scarborough as "supporters" and even offering to officiate at their wedding. But the two hosts have become increasingly critical of the President in the past months. Brzezinski once called him "possibly unfit mentally" and said that he's "such a narcissist, it's possible that he is mentally ill in a way."

In defense of Trump, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the deputy White House press secretary, argued that Brzezinski and Scarborough had said worse things about the president and his staff. "I don't think you can expect someone to be personally attacked day after day, minute by minute, and sit back," she told reporters. "The American people elected a fighter; they didn't elect somebody to sit back and do nothing. They knew what they were getting when they voted for Donald Trump."

However, veteran Fox News analyst Brit Hume thinks it's "absurd" that a president could feel bullied by hosts of a cable news show. Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer additionally asked, "Is - is that necessary?"

British author J.K. Rowling, who often shows her stance against Trump, has also reacted to Trump's insult on Brzezinski. "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power," she tweeted, quoting President Abraham Lincoln.

Brzezinski is expected to address Trump's remark on-air Friday morning. Meanwhile, MSNBC has tweeted, "It's a sad day for America when the President spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job."
