The news emerges less than a month after the streaming giant announced the second season renewal of the Neil Patrick Harris-led series adapted from books of the same title.

This is certainly a horrible nightmare for Lemony Snicket. Netflix reportedly has extended renewal of its take on Snicket's book series "A Series of Unfortunate Events" through season 3.

The streaming giant has "quietly" handed out a season three order for the dark comedy, TV Line reports. The renewal comes less than a month after the Neil Patrick Harris-starring series was picked up for its second season earlier in March. A rep for Netflix declined to comment, though.

Netflix previously announced the second season renewal through a letter from author Snicket which was uploaded on its Twitter account. "It has come to my attention that, despite my repeated warnings, you have viewed the Netflix adaptation of my distressing work, collectively known as A Series of Unfortunate Events," Snicket wrote in the letter. "To my horror, Netflix has been encouraged by this, and funneled their ill-gotten gains toward a second season of this unhappy and unnerving series," the author jokingly added.

The eight-episode first season of "A Series of Unfortunate Events", adapted from a popular book series of the same name, was debuted in January. The series starred Harris as Count Olaf, the evil guardian of the Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny. Olaf is scheming attempts to steal their fortune they inherited when their parents died. However, the children manage to evade Count Olaf's attempts and begin to pick up clues about their parents' past.

The show also stars Patrick Warburton (as a fictional version of Lemony Snicket himself), Joan Cusack, Alfre Woodard, Catherine O'Hara, Aasif Mandvi and Don Johnson.

The first season of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" is currently streaming on Netflix.
