WGN America is developing "Blood and Whiskey", a drama based on the life of whiskey master Jack Daniel. "Breaking Bad" and "The Path" actor Aaron Paul has signed a deal with the cable network to executive produce the upcoming series, The Hollywood Reporter has reported.

Based on Peter Krass' biography "Blood and Whiskey: The Life and Times of Jack Daniel", the project tells the harrowing true tale of Jack Daniel, the boy distiller, teenage moonshiner and outlaw who built the world’s biggest whiskey empire out of the ashes of the Civil War. The drama is executive produced by Paul alongside Zack Beckman, Drew Brown, Stan Spry, Jeff Holland, as well as "Mad Men" and "Lone Star" writer Andrew Colville, who will also pen the script for the project.

Jack Daniel's is the top-selling American whiskey in the world. Known for its distinctive square bottles, the company sells tens of millions of cases per year. Krass' book is the first-ever biography which captures Daniel's indomitable rise in the rough-edged world of the nineteenth-century whiskey trade and shows how his commitment to quality (his whiskey was always charcoal-filtered) and his flair for marketing and packaging helped create one of America's most venerable and recognizable brands.

"Blood and Whiskey" will join WGN's line-up of original dramas, following the network's hits "Outsiders" and "Underground". The cable network is also developing "Scalped", which is adapted from Jason Aaron's critically acclaimed comic about Native American.
