Liv Tyler ("The Leftovers"), Mark Gatiss ("Sherlock") and Peter Mullan ("Top of the Lake") will star on BBC One's Guy Fawkes-inspired thriller "Gunpowder". The three are joining the previously-announced cast member, Kit Harington ("Game of Thrones"), who will play the plot's mastermind named Robert Catesby.

Tyler will take the role of Catesby's cousin Anne Vaux, the one who worries about the whole idea. Gatiss will portray King James' spymaster-in-chief Robert Cecil, who is instructed to hunt down and torture those involved in the sinister plan. Meanwhile, Mullan will play Jesuit Father Garnet, who wants to keep the peace despite his unfavorable view of King James I.

Set in 1605, the historical drama is based around British radical Fawkese and a group of provincial English Catholics who attempted to blow up the House of Lords in United Kingdom Parliament and kill King James I in order to help restoring a Catholic to the crown. The attempted plot or best known as Gunpowder Plot, was foiled on November 5 when authorities at Westminster Palace found Fawkes guarding the explosives. Brits still celebrate Guy Fawkes Night every year on November 5 with a fireworks display and by burning his effigy on a bonfire.

"Gunpowder" will begin filming this month. The series is developed by Ronan Bennett, who also serves as the writer. The thriller is executive produced by Harington and is produced by Kudos in association with Harington's Thriker Film.
