Universal has finally set an official release date for the long-gestating adaptation of Broadway's "Wicked". First announced a decade ago, the movie about the witches of OZ is scheduled to make its way out across the country on December 20, 2019.

Stephen Daldry ("Billy Elliot") serves as a director and the play's original producer Marc Platt will be involved as producer for the movie. Composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman, who adapted the musical from Gregory Maguire's bestselling novel of the same name, will reunite for the screenplay.

No casting has been announced for the film, but Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth played the roles of Elphaba and Glinda on the original Broadway show. Each earned a Tony nomination for best actress in a musical in 2004. Chenoweth lost the title to Menzel.
