Earlier this week, one of David Bowie's fans started an online petition urging Kanye West to stop recording covers of the late singer's music. The petition quickly garnered thousands of signatures from supporters who can now sit back and relax knowing the project won't be happening because it has never been planned in the first place.
The petition was posted by a fan named Peter Piranha on 38Degrees.org after Daily Star reported a few days ago that West had already begun working on a covers album, which would saw the rapper putting his own spin on Bowie's hits. "Some are straightforward cover versions with Kanye actually singing. On others he is rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie's music," a source told the British tabloid of the non-existent record.
The idea didn't sit well with numerous fans of Bowie. "David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West, " Peter Piranha explained his reasons for starting the online campaign.
A rep for West has responded to the reports, telling TMZ that the 38-year-old superstar never had plans to record the covers album. However, he has a lot of respect for the late musician. Upon learning of Bowie's death earlier this month, West praised him in a Twitter post, "David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime."
