The series creator announces the end of his medieval drama in a trade ad and gives an explanation as to why he decided to pull the plug on the show.

AceShowbiz - Kurt Sutter's "The Bastard Executioner" is dead. It's the series creator himself who announces the bad news via an ad in The Hollywood Reporter. "The audience has spoken and unfortunately the word is, 'meh,' " the ad reads. "So with due respect, we bring our mythology to an epic and fiery close."

The medieval drama just ran for one season and wrapped up its first and now last chapter on November 17. The ambitious 14th century drama received no love from audience, with the last episode delivering just 870,000 viewers, dropping from its premiere which was watched by 2.1 million people.

To THR, Sutter explains why he decided to end the show even before FX officially announced the cancellation. "It's fantastic to get a good review [or] an award, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters, really, is numbers," he says, adding, "I'm not the guy sitting in my ivory tower spitting s**t out and not caring if anyone is watching. I like an audience. I don't want to write something that nobody's f***ing watching."

Sutter admits he's "heartbroken" to end the show that he loves. "Beside the obvious - pride and all that s**t - it's an epic mythology, and I really love the themes and every place that we were going to go with it. So I'm going to miss that," he shares.
