Disney shared "huge" news on Friday, August 14 at Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. The Mouse House is developing a "definitive" adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk in "Gigantic (2018)".
Filled with "comedy and deep emotion," the film will have "Tangled" helmer Nathan Greno as director and "Frozen (2013)" team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez as songwriters. Greno also invited the duo on stage to sing one song from the film during the panel.
"Gigantic" is set in Spain at the age of discovery in the 15th century. "You have to look at the original story, the iconic imagery, and then you have to mix in some twists and turns," Greno explained. "When John Lasseter asked us where are we going to set this film, we started looking around the world at different areas and countries, and we landed on Spain."
Greno went on, "This age of exploration was where people were going off finding new lands. That's what happens when Jack goes up the beanstalk and finds this whole new world." Going more specific, Jack will meet a spirited young girl giant named Ima. Greno said she was inspired by a real young girl they met while in Spain. "She gets her hands on a grown man Jack, and she thinks he's a toy," said Greno.
"Gigantic" is scheduled to hit cinemas in 2018.
