PBS adds an untitled Civil War drama into its original programming slate. Coming from Ridley Scott ("Prometheus", "Exodus: Gods and Kings") as a producer, the project has got a series order with an initial six episodes. It's written by David Zabel ("ER").

"We're looking to do drama that is a little different than what everyone else is doing," PBS president and CEO Paula A. Kerger said at the television Critics Association press tour on Monday, "which is not just to entertain but to educate and inspire."

Based on true stories and research from the past three years, it follows two volunteer nurses on opposing sides of the Civil War. Mary Phinney, a New England abolitionist, and Emma Green, a young Confederate belle collide at the Green family's hotel, which has been turned into a Union Army Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia, the longest-occupied Confederate city of the war.

The new series will join PBS' Sunday night lineup in winter 2016.
