Universal Studios is hoping to relaunch "The Wolfman" franchise after the 2010 film starring Benicio Del Toro failed to make a splash in the domestic box office. Not only that, the studio has hired heavyweight writers to reboot its other classic monster movies.
The original "Wolf Man", dated 1941, was one of the most popular horror stories ever told. The 2010 remake was plagued in its production and grossed only $61 million in the U.S. Now, Aaron Guzikowski who wrote "Prisoners" is put in charge to write a new take on the classic tale that hopefully will launch a new franchise and interweave with other monsters' stories. "Fargo" creator Noah Hawley and "Men in Black" scribe Ed Salomon are also attached to the project but in unknown posts.
However, the "Wolfman" reboot is still a long way to go as Universal preps "The Mummy" reboot as the movie to kick off the monster universe. Alex Kurtzman is set to direct with the plan to release it in theaters June 24, 2016. The project, which was announced earlier this year, is important to succeed for it will set the tone and stage for the rest of the universe.
Other monster movies will revolve around Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, and Van Helsing. It is yet clear which movie will come after "The Mummy" but April 21, 2017 is already secured for the second untitled universal monster movie.
As scribes, Guzikowski, Hawley, Salomon, Kurtzman and Chris Morgan will join hands in working on this cinematic universe, more like throwing ideas for each other's projects. Kurtzman and Morgan in particular will produce all of these monster movies.
