Ethan Hawke is to portray legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Barker in a biopic titled "Born to Be Blue". Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Robert Budreau, the film focuses on the musician's life after years of drug abuse and when he stages a comeback.
According to Deadline, Hawke actually had worked closely with the filmmakers to develop the project. Budreau's film is inspired by the rise of Baker, who has it all, talent to burn and movie star good looks, but his self-destructive ways destroy his career. It charts Baker's comeback in late '70s and the tumultuous love affair that changed the way he played music and helped him on the road to redemption.
Filming has begun in Ontario with Carmen Ejogo and Callum Keith Rennie also on board to star. Jennifer Jonas and Leonard Farlinger of New Real Films are producing the movie together with Budreau under his Lumanity Productions and Jake Seal of Black Hangar Studios. The project will be shopped around to buyers at the American Film Market next month.
