The first trailer for Syfy's "12 Monkeys" series has made its way out online after being screened at the TCA summer press tour. The video, hinting at the dark and creepy tone of the show, follows Cole (Aaron Stanford) who is sent back in time to stop a plague that decimates the human race.

Upon arriving in present day, he looks for Dr. Railly (Amanda Schull) who sends Cole back but finds it hard to believe his story. His mission is to locate Leland Frost (Zeljko Ivanek), who is believed to be the one responsible for the spread of the deadly virus.

The 13-episode series is set in post-apocalyptic future. Despite being based on the 1995 film directed by Terry Gilliam, co-executive producer Terry Matalas claimed, "It's a complete reimagining." Star Amanda Schull added, "This isn't a cover band of the film."

Judging from the trailer, Stanford's Cole is more mentally coherent that the one portrayed by Bruce Willis in the film. As for the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, it's not addressed in the trailer.

"12 Monkeys" is set for a 2015 premiere.
