"Frozen (2013)" has ended its amazing reign in Japan's box office as "Maleficent" rises to the top. The former film held the top spot for four long months and was forced to give up the throne to the Angelina Jolie film after such an impressive run.

"Frozen" opened at number one in Japanese theaters on March 15 and quickly became a phenomenon in the country. Adding $1.8 million this weekend, it was the highest-grossing Disney film ever in Japan with a total of more than $240 million. The tale of two sisters is also the biggest animated movie of all time with global income of more than $1.2 billion.

As for "Maleficent", the film opened to $7.1 million in Japan, making it the year's biggest for a live-action movie in the territory. It is also the biggest bow for a Jolie title in the market. The Sleeping Beauty tale has earned up to $630 million globally.

"We've had an incredible run with 'Frozen' and it's been a terrific platform for exposing audiences to 'Maleficent'," Disney's head of distribution Dave Hollis told TheWrap. "There are some significant similarities between the films - its female-empowering message, for one - and we think it will be embraced there."

It is predicted that "Frozen" will slide down to number 3 as "Edge of Tomorrow" enters the Japanese market as well.
