Meryl Streep will once again portray a real-life character in her next project. The Academy Award-winning actress has been tapped to star as opera legend Maria Callas in HBO's TV movie, Page Six reports.

The film will be based on Terrence McNally's play "Master Class" that depicted the opera singer when she gave a series of master classes at the Juilliard School in New York from October 1971 to March 1972. The play debuted on Broadway in 1995 with Australian actress Zoe Caldwell as Callas and Audra McDonald in supporting role. Though the performers' voices were criticized for being worn out, the tour was an enormous popular success.

Mike Nichols will reportedly direct the TV movie, which is scheduled to start filming in January 2015, after Streep completes the production for drama comedy "Ricky and the Flash" about an old fading rock star. "Meryl is learning the tricks of the guitar trade from none other than legendary Neil Young" for that movie, a source tells the site.

Streep, who played Julia Child in "Julie & Julia" and Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady", was nominated for Best Actress at recent Oscars for her role in "August: Osage County". She has filmed Disney movie musical "Into the Woods" where she plays The Witch.
