The Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office has announced that David Brockie of metal band GWAR died of accidental heroin overdose. Officer Arkuie Williams told local media on Tuesday, June 3 that the 50 year-old died of "acute heroin toxicity and the manner of death is accident."
Brockie was found dead in his Richmond house on March 23. "At approximately 6:53 P.M. on Sunday, Richmond Police were called to a residence in the 4800 block of West Seminary Avenue for a report of a deceased individual," a police spokesperson told Fox411 at that time. "When officers arrived, they found David M. Brockie, 50, deceased inside the home. Detectives do not suspect foul play at this time."
Brockie went by the stage name of Oderus Urungus. He formed the Grammy-nominated band in 1984 and the band rose to prominence due to their elaborate and grotesque costumes as well as showmanship.
After Brockie's death, the band established Dave Brockie funds which promotes the advancement of music and performance in the arts, encouraging promising talents who have trouble with funding through mainstream channels.
