First Official Look at Meryl Streep as The Witch in 'Into the Woods'

The multi-awarded actress takes on the role originally portrayed by Bernadette Peters in the Broadway play.

AceShowbiz - Three-time Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep is playing The Witch in the forthcoming Disney movie musical "Into the Woods". How she looks like in character is now revealed in the first official photo released from the Rob Marshall-directed film, based on the Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine Broadway production, which began filming in the U.K. this week.

In the photo, the 64-year-old actress transforms into the wicked witch with her unruly silver-gray hair, dark frock and talens-like nails, as she tries to have an evil curse that has taken her beauty be reversed. The character was portrayed by Bernadette Peters in the Broadway musical, which interweaves the plot of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

Aside from Streep, the movie boasts an all-star cast composed of Johnny Depp as The Wolf, Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as her Prince Charming, and Christine Baranski as Cinderella's Stepmother. MacKenzie Mauzy stars as Rapunzel, with Billy Magnussen as her prince, while Daniel Huttlestone takes the part of Jack from the "Jack and the Beanstalk" story, and Lilla Crawford stars in her first ever feature film as Little Red Riding Hood.

Their stories intertwine around a baker played by James Corden and his wife portrayed by Emily Blunt, their quest to start a family and their interaction with Streep's witch character and the curse she has put on them. The much-anticipated film will be playing in movie theaters on December 25, 2014.
