'Whale Rider' and 'North Country' helmer Niki Caro is on board to serve behind the lens for the sport drama.

AceShowbiz - Kevin Costner has secured a role in another sport-themed movie. After starring in "Field of Dreams", "Tin Cup" and "For the Love of the Game", the two-time Oscar winner is now on board Disney's "McFarland". The feature will be helmed by Niki Caro, who directed Keisha Castle-Hughes in "Whale Rider" and Charlize Theron in "North Country".
As reported by Variety, the Disney pic revolves around the champion track team of the predominantly-Hispanic California town of McFarland which overcomes social and physical challenges during their meets in the 1980s. Costner, who played alongside the late singer and actress Whitney Houston in "The Bodyguard", will star as the track coach.
Set to produce the drama are Mayhem Pictures' Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, the duo behind Mark Wahlberg's "Invincible" and Diane Lane's "Secretariat". No start date has been set yet.
Costner recently starred in Warner Bros.' "Man of Steel", in which he became the adoptive father of Henry Cavill's titular character. He is currently filming "Black and White" for director/writer Mike Binder.
The 58-year-old actor will next be seen in Kenneth Branagh-directed "Jack Ryan" and Luc Besson-written "Three Days to Kill".
