"Behind the Candelabra" delivered huge ratings for HBO on Sunday, May 26. The Steven Soderbergh-directed film attracted 2.4 million viewers in its first airing, making it the most-watched HBO original film premiere in almost a decade, following "Something the Lord Made" which posted 2.6 million viewers in 2004.
When the second airing is counted, the Liberace biopic drew a total of 3.5 million viewers. It's an impressive performance considering the fact that TV viewership tends to decline during Memorial Day weekend.
"Behind the Candelabra" premiered just before the deadline for this year's Emmy consideration. With rave reviews from critics, the film will likely become a strong contender in the long-form categories.
The biopic stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon as flamboyant pianist-vocalist Liberace and his younger lover Scott Thorson, respectively, who had a secretive five-year love affair despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds.
