One of Jean-Claude Van Damme's films will be rebooted by Universal Pictures. As The Hollywood Reporter learns, the studio is confirmed to have "Timecop", a remake of Van Damme's 1994 film, as its next project with Marc Shmuger and Tom McNulty attached to produce.

Based on the series from Dark Horse Comics, the original feature was directed by Peter Hyams and featured Van Damme as a police officer who regulated time travel in the future. The site reports that the new version will be "a re-imagining of the concept" without the involvement of the Belgian martial artist. No scribe is currently on board yet.

In the classic sci-fi, Van Damme starred opposite Ron Silver, Mia Sara, Bruce McGill and Gloria Reuben. Released on September 16, 1994, it debuted atop the box office by taking in $12 million and secured the throne in its second week with $8 million.

The film was ever adapted into a TV series of the same title, running for nine episodes in 1997 with T.W. King and Cristi Conaway as its stars. Cryo Interactive even developed a game based on the action-packed pic and released it back in 1995.

Despite the commercial success, the movie received negative reviews from critics, mostly because of Van Damme's acting.
