It looks like Tom Cruise did not know that his wife had rented an apartment in Manhattan, NYC which is separate from the house they shared when they are in town.

The speculation that Tom Cruise is blindsided in his wife Katie Holmes' decision to get a divorce is getting stronger as there are reports that she had found a new place to live weeks before the papers were filed. Holmes allegedly rented her own New York City property which is separate from the couple's home.
Holmes announced the divorce through her New Jersey-based lawyer Jonathan Wolfe on Friday, June 29. Cruise was away filming "Oblivion" in Iceland, making her move to the new place easier. Cruise released a statement via his rep shortly thereafter, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."
The 33-year-old actress is asking for the sole custody of their daughter Suri. Cruise's attorney, Bert Fields, is hoping for peace in the courtroom, stating "I would hope that it's not a contentious matter. I know Tom is not a particularly contentious person. [As far as our legal team goes,] we're thinking about who to use. We have to discuss strategy."
