'Torchwood' Explores More Global Story in Starz
TV

With the new series, 'Camelot', 'Spartacuz' and 'Pillars of the Earth' coming ahead, Starz is establishing itself as a genre-friendly network.

"Torchwood" will come to Starz in summer 2011. Starz Entertainment has acquired the television rights to the BBC franchise and will debut the 10-episode series in the U.S. next year, around the same time BBC One will debut it in the U.K.

The key cast such as John Barrowman who plays Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles who portrays Gwen Cooper will return to the new version accompanied by new faces. The additional key cast will reflect a more international scope of the series and will be announced "soon".

"Torchwood" previously aired in the U.S. on BBC America. Later on an idea to have it co-produced by a major network was developed by FOX, which later decided to pass.

The show itself is a drama that puts extraterrestrial threats into a very real world, and asks how humanity deals with the danger - while fighting mankind's darkest instincts. The latest edition was a five-episode miniseries called "Children of Earth".

This Starz version is to tell "a more explosive and global story". Showrunner Russell T. Davies described what's not, saying "It's not a new version, it's not a reboot. It's not going to be 'Lost' and take 20 years to find out what's going on. It's going to have a most remarkable conclusion after 10 episodes."
