Initial Plans for Two 'The Hobbit' Movies Changed

'The Hobbit' will still be adapted into two movies, but the second one will no longer serve as a bridge between the book and the Lord of the Rings trilogy like what has been originally planned.

Producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo Del Toro have revised the plan for their two "The Hobbit" movies. In an interview with Empire Magazine, the filmmaker duo spilled the bean that while they stick to their idea to adapt the novel into two films, "The Hobbit 2" won't be used as the bridge between the book and the Lord of the Rings trilogy as what was initially set.

"We've decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur," Del Toro revealed the new concept. Jackson then added, providing explanation on the change of mind, "We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie. The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [LOTR] trilogy."

Based on the classic J.R.R. Tolkien novel, the two "The Hobbit" movies are co-written by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson who has directed Tolkien's other novel adaptation, the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The first "Hobbit" film is scheduled for December 1, 2011 U.S. release, and the second one is expected to hit theaters across the U.S. a year later on December 1, 2012.
