Madea is a beloved comic creation, but Tyler Perry isn't much of a filmmaker; At first you think that's amazing. By the end, you're amazed it took him so long to create such a slack, formless, monotonous mess
considering how well the character has served him, Tyler Perry certainly doesn't return the favor in this graceless installment combining raucous comedy and turgid melodrama to undigestible effect
"A Madea Family Funeral" is raw pulp, but pulp made with more conviction than the last three or four films; It isn't good, exactly, but it's Perry good. It combines weaponized comedy and sexualized soap opera in a way that defuses all shame
"A Madea Family Funeral" gives its title character an unceremonious send-off, as amateurish and schlocky as any of the mean-but-good-hearted old lady's previous forays into the big screen
