In his deeply personal documentary Remake, filmmaker Ross McElwee turns the camera on his own family, crafting a poignant meditation on memory, mortality, and the stories we inherit. The film follows McElwee as he revisits his childhood home in Charlotte, North Carolina, accompanied by his young son, Adrian McElwee, and his longtime friend, the charismatic Charleen Swansea. Together, they attempt to reconstruct the past, using old home movies, family photographs, and improvised reenactments to evoke the spirit of a bygone era. Central to the narrative is McElwee’s struggle to connect with his absent father, a surgeon who died when Ross was a boy, and his desire to pass along a sense of history to his own son. The film’s tone is both intimate and philosophical, blending observational documentary with playful, almost theatrical, recreations. As McElwee grapples with the elusive nature of truth and the fragility of family bonds, Remake becomes a universal exploration of how we attempt to preserve what is lost, and how the act of storytelling itself can shape our understanding of who we are.
