In the quiet, grief-stricken aftermath of World War I, a young German woman named Anna, portrayed by Paula Beer, mourns the death of her fiancé, Frantz. Her life is a monochrome of sorrow until a mysterious Frenchman, Adrien (Pierre Niney), appears in her small town, laying flowers on Frantz’s grave. Directed by Francois Ozon, this poignant drama explores the fragile threads of healing and deception that connect former enemies. As Adrien shares stories of a deep friendship with Frantz in pre-war Paris, he brings a tentative light back into the lives of Anna and Frantz’s devastated parents (Ernst Stotzner and Marie Gruber). Yet, the solace of these memories is shadowed by unspoken truths and the heavy burden of national hatred that lingers in the air. Moving between a somber, black-and-white palette and moments of evocative color, the film becomes a haunting journey as Anna, driven by a need for closure and connection, pursues the full story across borders, challenging her own perceptions of love, loss, and forgiveness.
