From the musical minds of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie comes a hilarious and awkwardly charming comedy that follows the world's fourth most popular folk-parody duo from New Zealand as they navigate the absurdities of life in New York City. Bret and Jemaine, played by the creators themselves, are two hapless musicians whose dreams of stardom are perpetually undermined by their own social ineptitude, a hopelessly devoted and slightly unhinged manager named Murray, played by Rhys Darby, and a singularly obsessed fan, Mel, portrayed by Kristen Schaal. Their central conflict isn't just about getting a gig; it's a daily struggle to pay rent, understand American culture, and maintain their fragile friendship, all while spontaneously breaking into deadpan musical numbers about robots, business socks, and unrequited love. This delightfully off-kilter film, directed by Hannah Clarke, captures the duo's unique brand of dry wit and melodic whimsy, offering a series of cringe-worthy misadventures and catchy tunes that celebrate the glorious struggle of two very nice guys trying, and often hilariously failing, to make it big.
