In the ongoing debates surrounding privacy and information rights on the internet, no figure has been more contentious than Julian Assange, the Australian-born founder of the whistle-blower website WikiLeaks. Assange has been both praised and vilified for his actions as a purveyor of radical, independent reportage. In this new biopic, director Robert Connolly shines a spotlight on Assange's early years as a teenage hacker.

In 1989, eighteen-year-old Julian (Alex Williams) lives with his activist mother (Rachel Griffiths), his much younger half-brother, his teenage wife (Laura Wheelwright) and infant son. His most prized possession is a Commodore 64. Under the pseudonym "Mendax," Julian and two of his tech-savvy friends form a hacker group known as the International Subversives. The rules of the game are simple: don't steal anything, leave no trace of your presence, and share any information you discover. Giddy over this high-tech avenue for teenage rebellion, the trio breaks into bank databases and government websites, taking pleasure in poking around where they don't belong. But when Julian hacks into a Pentagon database - uncovering the bloody truth behind a recent military incursion - he realizes for the first time the gravity of his status as an outlet for the truth. Meanwhile, the group attracts the attention of police detective Ken Roberts (Anthony LaPaglia), whose analogue approach to sleuthing is tested by this new criminal element.

The contrast between old-school investigative methods and the quicksilver speed of the emerging digital age gives the film much of its juice: while Julian "travels all over the world" from the comfort of his computer desk, the police are reduced to manually following a dial-up signal as it clicks through various receivers at the local phone company. This hands-on approach seems to prevail, as the police eventually close in on the young hacker. But Julian's dramatic arrest at the hands of the Australian Federal Police was only the beginning-a clarion call for a new age of digital activism.

He soon discovers that he's become a pawn in a centuries-old rivalry between two clandestine and powerful groups : Lycans and Vampires.

Striking and sophisticated vampire SELENE (Kate Beckinsale) is a top ranking member of the Death Dealers, an elite Vampire warrior class charged with hunting the Lycans into extinction. She accidentally stumbles accross evidence that the Lycans have plans to kidnap a young human doctor -- Michael -- but she's not sure why.

Neither side has ever had much use for people, preferring to avoid the dangers of close human contact. Selene alerts the arrogant, aristocratic KRAVEN (Shane Brolly), regent Vampire leader, but he dismisses her concerns. "The Lycans are a savage, undisciplined bunch," he sneers, "common street thugs." How could they possibly mount any kind of organized operation against the great Vampire dynasty? Kraven is more concerned with elevating his status and keeping himself pleasured by the other female vampires in their sprawling mansion compound.

But Selene won't let go of her hunch, and disobeying Kraven, steals away from the estate to shadow Michael through the city. In spite of her centuries of paramilitary training, she finds herself becoming curiously interested in Michael -- who, like all other humans, has no idea that Vampires or Lycans even exist. In the course of her surveillance, Selene uncovers a Lycan plot that could prove fatal to the entire Vampire race -- but none of her kind will believe her.

When the Lycans make their next move on Michael, Selene is there to fend off the assault. But during the violent struggle, Michael is bitten by LUCIAN (Michael Sheen), the debonair but ruthless Lycan leader. This sets into motion the age-old cycle of the young human slowly evolving into werewolf -- and thus unwittingly becoming Selene's mortal enemy.

Desperate for an ally, Selene awakens VIKTOR (Bill Nighy), the supreme Vampire overlord, from his hundred-year slumber, to warn him of the Lycan's plot. But she's inexperienced in the ancient ways of reviving Vampires from their restorative sleep sessions, and is severely disciplined by the ruling clique for the brazen misdeed. Not only that, the angry Viktor demands proof of her outlandish claim -- but she has none. She simply knows that Lucian is organizing an attack, building a werewolf army intend on revenge after years of persecution at the hands of the arrogant Vampires.

When the battle begins, which side will you choose?

Having escaped years of imprisonment, vampire warrioress Selene finds herself in a changed world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species. Now Selene must battle the humans and a frightening new breed of super Lycans to ensure the death dealers' survival.

Vampire death dealer Selene fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David and his father Thomas, she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.
