Ashton Chen, born on January 6, 1988, in Dengfeng, Zhengzhou, Henan, is a renowned Chinese actor and martial artist who rose to fame as a child star with extraordinary kung fu skills. Originally named Chen Xiaolong, he has also been widely known by his stage name Shi Xiaolong, a dharma name given to him by his master, Shi Yongxin, the abbot of the Shaolin Temple, where Chen became a disciple at just two years old. Raised under the rigorous tutelage of his father and the abbot, Chen began training in martial arts at an extremely young age, laying the foundation for a career that would captivate audiences across China and beyond. His first taste of the spotlight came at the age of four, when his electrifying performance at the International Shaolin Kung Fu Festival in Zhengzhou caught the attention of entertainment industry scouts.
Chen’s breakthrough as a child actor occurred in 1994 when he starred in the martial arts comedy Shaolin Popey, a film that showcased his incredible agility and charm, turning him into an overnight sensation. This success led to a string of roles in other action-comedies and family films, solidifying his status as one of China’s most beloved young performers. However, at the height of his early fame, Chen made the surprising decision to step away from acting in 2003 to pursue his education in the United States. After a brief return to China in 2005 to star as Zhan Zhao in the television series Young Justice Bao III, he went back to the U.S. to continue his studies, graduating from the prestigious Performing Children’s School in New York City in 2008.
Upon completing his education, Chen resumed his acting career, bringing a matured presence to the screen. A notable highlight came in 2010 when he played one of Ip Man’s students in the critically acclaimed martial arts film Ip Man 2, starring Donnie Yen. This role allowed Chen to demonstrate how his lifelong dedication to martial arts had evolved from childhood novelty to refined, professional skill. Since then, he has continued to work steadily in Chinese cinema and television, balancing his dual identities as a devout Shaolin disciple and a versatile actor. Today, Ashton Chen remains a respected figure in the entertainment industry, celebrated for his unique journey from a prodigious child star to a disciplined martial artist and accomplished performer.
