The Good Lord Bird is a historical drama television series based on the 2013 novel of the same name by James McBride. The series premiered on October 4, 2020, on Showtime. The show follows the story of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a young slave boy who joins abolitionist John Brown's (Ethan Hawke) raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859.
This clip from the first episode of the series shows Onion being introduced to Brown. Brown is impressed by Onion's intelligence and courage, and he takes him on as his personal attendant. Onion quickly learns that Brown is a complex and dangerous man, but he is also a man of deep faith and conviction.
