Today is Jonah's (Ben Feldman) first day of work at Cloud 9, a St. Louis megastore that's part of a national chain, and things are already off to a rocky start. First, there's his interview with Dina (Lauren Ash), who questions him on his relationship status and sexuality. Then, after being hired, he inadvertently insults his supervisor, Amy (America Ferrera). His apology is no less poorly received, so Amy asks him to reduce the prices of electronics to keep him away from her. Unfortunately, Jonah re-prices them to 25 cents instead of reducing them by 25%, causing a mad dash at the store. This mishap doesn't go unnoticed by fellow new employee Mateo (Nico Santos), an overachiever determined to get ahead.
Despite his repeated screwups, Jonah eventually connects with Amy when he gets her to reveal her no-nonsense attitude is the result of being bored with her life. In an effort to brighten her day, Jonah sticks Amy's favorite glow-in-the-dark stars to the store's ceiling. When Cheyenne's (Nichole Bloom) baby daddy proposes by staging a burglary turned flash mob, Dina kills the lights, revealing Jonah's handiwork. The illuminated ceiling leads to a shared moment of happiness for Amy, fellow employee Garrett (Colton Dunn) and manager Glenn (Mark McKinney). Jonah got almost everything wrong on his first day, except the one thing he got right.
