As the official Indian agent, Jamie and Ian visits a Cherokee village. They are interested in guns, not the knives they have brought. They insist that their fight is with the settlers who cross the Treaty Line. They appreciate Jamie's honesty when he can't promise them guns. That night, two young Indian women are sent to pleasure him. He is flabbergasted, then politely turns them down. Tom Christie has Claire remove the sutures from his hand. She says when it is healed, she can fix his right hand. He declines saying it's God's will. His daughter Malva is very interested in Claire's healing techniques. She invites her to accompany her to examine Marsali's pregnancy. As Claire takes Marsali's pulse, she sees more bruises. Marsali admits Fergus is drinking heavily from guilt about not being able to prevent the Lionel Brown rape incident. The church/school is going up fast. Roger holds a funeral for Granny Wilson. During the ceremony, she suddenly wakens. She has a slow, but fatal, aneurysm that hasn't quite finished her off. Claire's hand in reviving her cause some of the settlers to think she is a witch. Marsali starts having birth pains. Roger hunts down a drunk Fergus and forces him to go to the aid of his wife. A baby boy is delivered with dwarfism. Fergus is hugely upset by this. The Cherokee show up asking about guns. Jamie says there won't be any. They leave with much grumbling. Jamie is afraid that Tom will use the church as a way to promote his political agenda. He tells Tom in no uncertain terms that it will be a meeting house for everyone, including Claire and other papists. Tom returns home and vents his frustrations on Malva for spending so much time with Claire. He tries to whip her, but his hands won't allow him to. He storms over to Claire's telling her he is ready to have his right hand fixed. Fergus and Marsali's son is given the name Henri-Christian.
