Series Premiere. When Joshua, an 8-year-old living in Rome, West Virginia, shows signs of demonic possession, his mother entreats Reverend Anderson, the pastor at her church, to attempt an exorcism. The reverend agrees, though he's painfully aware that there have been several such possessions in Rome over the years. The most noteworthy of these involved Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), who as a boy was locked in a violent conflict with his possessed mother Sarah--an experience that shattered both their lives.
Kyle, who recently returned home after a failed marriage and lengthy self-imposed exile, has been leading a hermitic life in his childhood house, resisting the efforts of his adoptive sister Megan to move forward. But after learning about Joshua's condition, Kyle decides to join forces with Anderson in confronting the demons that possess the boy, though Kyle is not convinced that religion is at the root of the possession.
