On 10 April 2010, a Polish Air Force VIP aircraft carrying the President of Poland Lech Kaczy?ski, his wife Maria Kaczy?ska and other top officials, crashes short of the runway in a wooded area while on final approach to Smolensk North Airport in heavy fog and low visibility. All 96 passengers and crew members on board are killed.
