When Sutton makes her dramatic return, Emma is thrilled that her sister is still alive. Ethan and Thayer, however, take a more accusatory tone and question Sutton about her disappearance, including the lying game Emma received. Sutton shows them the gash on her forehead, insisting that someone tried to kill her. She tells them Annie Hobbs saved her and took care of her in a nearby motel. Due to the threatening note Emma received, Sutton agrees to stay out of sight until her gash heals. Emma continues her life as Sutton while the real Sutton takes the guys to the motel where Annie Hobbs is staying to prove her story. When they arrive, the room is empty, and Annie is gone.

Back at school, Mad gets some new romantic attention. Ryan, one of Sutton's former victims of torment, transferred back to their school and makes it clear that his sights are set on Mads.

While Emma and her family are at the Youth Ballet Benefit, hosted by Rebecca and Kristin, Sutton relaxes alone at the Mercer house. Sutton hears a loud noise and sees someone's shadow, so she runs out of the house. Sutton shows up outside the party, and a worried Thayer meets her by his car. As she tells him what happened at the house, Kristin interrupts and notices the gash on her forehead. Sutton lies, telling her mom that she just fell down. Kristin goes to find Ted, so that he can examine it. Sutton quickly changes clothes with Emma to keep up the charade, and Ethan leaves with Emma so that they aren't seen together.

Back at the party, Laurel is invited to perform with the live band and wows the audience, catching Justin's eye. After, they have a confrontation, Justin admits the real reason he came to Phoenix, confessing he lied about his parents' death. Justin tells Laurel that his mom died years ago and that Ted's irresponsible behavior played a part in his mother's death during an operation.
