Lost Episode 5.03 Jughead

"Efren Salonga!" Desmond frantically runs through a Philippines seaport market shouting out the name. He's a doctor, and Desmond finds him playing dice. Desmond quickly explains his wife is pregnant and having a difficult labor. Desmond rushes Salonga to his sailboat, and Salonga helps Penny give birth to a baby boy.

WHOOSH to the sailboat two years later as Desmond, Penny and their little boy sail to London so Desmond can find Daniel Faraday's mother. Penny is concerned that's it's not a good plan. Faraday said only Desmond could help, so Desmond needs to do this. Penny only asks that he promises he'll never go back to that island, and Desmond agrees. Why would he want to go back there?

Cut to Faraday, Charlotte, Miles and the remaining survivors on the island as they gather around the creek and wait for Sawyer and Juliet. Miles notices a wire and follows it back to a landmine. He's about to warn them not to move -- when KA-THWOOM! One of the survivors trips the line and detonates a landmine. Two are killed.

Then half a dozen soldiers emerge from the tree line wearing U. S. army uniforms. They're scary looking, armed with bows and arrows. A tough-looking young woman, Ellie, holds them at rifle point and asks who's in charge. She speaks with a British accent. Miles points to Faraday, and Ellie asks where the rest of their group is. Faraday tells her they aren't who she thinks they are.

Meanwhile, Sawyer, Juliet and Locke have Jones and his cohort at gunpoint. One of the guys, with the name Cunningham stitched on his uniform, quickly says something to Jones -- only he speaks in Latin. Juliet is surprised and responds in Latin. How do they know how to speak Latin? The same way Juliet does -- because they're Others.

Ellie and her team march Faraday's group through the jungle to a former U. S. military field camp taken over by the Others. Richard Alpert greets them and asks if they've come back for their bomb. Faraday realizes the Others think they are part of the American military, and tells Charlotte and Miles their best chance of staying alive is to let the Others continue thinking that. Faraday points to a man with bandaged hands and guesses they are radiation burns. He asks Richard if the hydrogen bomb's housing has been compromised. Richard doesn't say, but Faraday warns him that the bomb could destroy the entire island. If Faraday can't render it inert, then all of them are going to die. Richard tells Ellie to take him to the bomb.

Off the island at Oxford University, Desmond discovers they have no record of a Professor Faraday there. Desmond walks through the physics department and finds Faraday's old office. However, it's locked, marked as storage, and has a skull and crossbones sign warning of fumigation. Desmond forces the door open and goes inside. Everything is covered in tarps. Desmond steps on a framed photograph of Faraday and a young woman. Then he uncovers the maze that Faraday ran his rat through -- when a voice calls out for him not to touch it. Desmond looks over and sees a custodian. He says Desmond isn't the first one asking about Faraday and his work. Desmond tells him the university says there's no record of Faraday. The custodian says can you blame them after what he did to that poor girl. Desmond doesn't know what he's talking about. What girl?

Desmond knocks on the door of an English row house and meets Abigail. Desmond asks if Theresa Spencer is there. He explains that Daniel Faraday sent him to talk to Theresa. Theresa and Abigail are sisters, and Abigail lets him in. Desmond says that Faraday asked him to get a message to his mom, but he's having a hard time tracking her down. And then Desmond meets Theresa. It's the woman from the photograph, but now she's bedridden. Her eyes are vacant. Hollow. Abigail explains that Theresa is away right now. Sometimes she wakes up and thinks she's three or wanting to talk to their dead father. Desmond apologizes and starts to leave. Abigail says Daniel also abandoned Theresa. He left her in this condition and ran off to the States. If it hadn't been for Charles Widmore's help... Desmond freezes. Charles Widmore was Daniel's benefactor and funded his research. At least he took responsibility for the result of it and has been taking care of Theresa.

On the island, Locke, Sawyer and Juliet are trekking with Jones and Cunningham. Juliet tells them learning Latin was part of Others 101 -- gotta learn the langauge of the enlightened. Juliet talks to Cunningham in Latin, tells him they are not the enemy. She asks to be taken to their camp and Richard Alpert. Cunningham considers it. Just as he's about to agree -- Jones rushes forward and CRR-ACK! Breaks Cunningham's neck in one vicious snap! Everyone is shocked, and Jones uses the moment to tear off into the jungle. Sawyer yells at Locke to shoot him, but Locke refuses. Sawyer asks why, and Locke says, "Because he's one of my people."

They track Jones back to the tent outpost. From a ridge above the camp, Locke, Sawyer and Juliet watch Ellie leave with Faraday. Locke heads down to talk to Richard while Sawyer and Juliet leave to rescue the geek.

Ellie leads Faraday to a wooden tower from which the hydrogen bomb hangs. Stenciled on the side is the name "Jughead." Faraday climbs a makeshift ladder and circles around the bomb examining it when he finds a big crack in the casing. He tells Ellie it needs to be sealed in lead and buried in concrete. They don't need to worry about disarming it -- if they do what he said, it won't go off. Sawyer and Juliet sneak up on Ellie, and she reluctantly hands over her rifle.

In London, Desmond barges into Widmore's office and confronts him. He wants to know where he can find Daniel Faraday's mother. Widmore asks if his daughter is safe. Desmond asks again, where is Faraday's mother? Widmore tells him in Los Angeles and gives him the address. Widmore asks Desmond to deliver his message but not to put Penny's life in danger. He warns Desmond that he's getting involved with something that goes back many, many years. Desmond thanks him for the advice and leaves.

Desmond returns to the sailboat and Penny. She asks if he found Faraday's mom, and Desmond lies, says she died a few years ago. Penny immediately picks up on it and asks him why he's lying. Desmond says she's in Los Angeles. He tells her it was a mistake, that it's not their problem anymore. Penny asks what happens if he remembers something else. Desmond tells her he'll forget it. Nothing matters -- only her and their son, Charlie, and he'll never leave them again. But Penny realizes he'll never forget it and tells him she and the baby are going with him to Los Angeles... to whatever's waiting for them there.

On the island, Locke walks into the camp. Jones sees him and immediately shoves a gun into his neck and orders him down on the ground. Locke asks to talk to Richard, but Jones won't have it. He's about to pull the trigger when Richard steps out and stops him. Locke tells Richard that Jacob sent him. Richard is surprised to hear that. Jones says Locke was the one who killed Cunningham, but Richard tells him to put his gun down... and calls him Widmore. Locke is amazed and asks if his name is Charles Widmore. Widmore won't respond.

Locke shows Richard the compass he gave him right after he took the bullet out of Locke's leg and dressed the wound. Richard asks why he doesn't remember it, and Locke tells him because it hasn't happened yet. Locke asks him how to get off the island, but Richard is wary about sharing that very privileged information. Locke says that he is the Others' leader, but Richard insists they have a very specific process for selecting a leader. Locke asks what year it is, and Richard tells him 1954. Locke tells him he'll be born on May 30, 1956 in Tustin, California, and Richard should visit him.

Then Locke hears the hum starting to build and sees the light growing whiter as another flash is about to happen. He asks quickly how does he get off the island, but FAA-ZAAAM! The flash subsides, and Locke is standing in an empty clearing with no tents, no Others, and no Richard Alpert. Sawyer and Juliet returns with Faraday. Charlotte seems okay at first but suddenly collapses on the ground unconscious with blood pouring out of her nose. Faraday tries to wake her up, but she doesn't respond.
