Bobby's school receives a grant to grow an organic garden supplying vegetables for the school. Peggy is hired as the garden teacher, and students are granted physical education credit for tending the garden.
But the football team wants much of the land back because it has overrun part of their practice field. Peggy's job and the program are jeopardized when the garden fails to yield edible crops because of insect infestation.
Bobby tries desperately to save the garden, but Peggy tries the more unethical tactic of secretly using pesticides. Suddenly, the garden begins to flourish, and even the impressed football players begin to support the program.
Meanwhile, although he realizes that Bobby will not be a true athlete, Hank is excited that Bobby has become part of a real team.
