The gang is psyched to celebrate the wedding of their friends Derrick and Eric. Alex realizes their Brangelina name is going to be "Derrick." Actually, it could also be "Erick." Penny is jazzed because she won't be at the singles table. Jane is upset because she's the only one not in the wedding party. As for Max, he's being pressured to perform with one of the top three Chicago-based all-male Madonna cover bands: Mandonna. (Ma-Donald and Material Earl are the other two.
Brad relishes being the "aside guy" to his boss. That means he's the person who the big guy confides in with snarky comments during boring meetings. It also means Brad gets the inside scoop on office news. For example, he's the first to know that his entire department is getting fired. Just like that, one of the best aside guys in the business is unemployed.
While Jolieing in her sexy dress, Jane learns she's needed as a replacement in the wedding party. She dons an oversized yellow tux and later takes over at the reception when Eric admits he overspent. Jane doubles the amount of appetizers by cutting them in half. She may need to put some of that thriftiness to use once she learns her hubby is out of work. Too bad Brad's afraid to break the news to her.
After Penny breaks up with yet another boyfriend who we again only meet through dialogue, she's seated at the Skype table. It's where all the guests who couldn't make the wedding attend via laptop. Penny's bummed until she experiences some online chemistry with Chris (guest star Brian Austin Green). Too bad she loses this virtual love connection (and actual Skype connection) in mid-flirt.
Dave tries to cheer up Penny by telling her how amazing she is. It's a sweet speech that has the two of them saying "I love you" to each other. It's said in a casual way, but Penny wonders if there's more to it. She decides to talk to Alex but ditches that notion when she realizes Dave is in her room. Nothing was going on, but that doesn't mean these exes don't still have some feelings for each other.
Alex recruits the other members of Mandonna to convince Max to sing again. Pretty soon he's plopping on a fake mole and dusting off the cone bras. Brad eventually comes clean about his job loss. Jane takes the news in stride. Well, not really. But she eventually steps up to support her hubby.
Penny is thrilled when Chris shows up at the reception. He's in a wheelchair because of a broken leg, but that doesn't mean he can't dance. Well, yes it does. But Penny deals. As for Alex and Dave, they hold hands in the background as the crowd goes wild to the sounds of Mandonna performing "Like a Prayer." Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone... unless you have friends.
